Is the Caravan Industry Regulated in Australia? And what is RVMAP and ISO 9001 Certification?

“The Australian caravan and camping industry is a $23 billion industry that directly employs 53,000 people, manufactures 25,000 vehicles per annum, services over 740,000 vehicles on the road, generates 12 million trips and creates 60 million visitor nights across the country.”

It is a self-regulated industry and is headed up by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia*, operating as a not-for-profit membership. It is supported by its members and works very hard across the country to lift the standards and hold manufacturers, to a high level of compliance and safety for the Australian population that enjoy camping. We at MDC are one of the organisations largest supporters in both funding and complying with their accreditation programs.

Becoming accredited is a voluntary process however, and there are still plenty of caravan manufacturers that are not taking safety and road compliance as seriously as they should.

If you want to make sure you are buying a top-notch, highest quality, technologically sound and SAFE caravan or camper, you should look for two specification certifications – ISO 9001 and RVMAP.
At MDC, we are proud to say that we are one of the few manufacturers in the industry to have achieved ISO 9001 Certification.

1 in 13 Australian households now own a recreational vehicle, and caravans and campervans are the fastest growing vehicle type in Australia by registration for the past eight years. This means it’s a booming industry and being self-regulated, you can see why it’s so important that the caravan company that you choose to buy from, holds itself to very high standards for safety, technology and quality.

ISO 9001 ACCREDITED:

What does ISO 9001 Quality Certified mean for you?

ISO 9001 is the internationally recognized Quality Management System (QMS) standard that ensures caravan manufacturers have proven processes in place that are effective at achieving consistent quality outcomes for all their products and services.

Becoming ISO 9001 certified is no small feat, and at MDC we’ve embraced this journey wholeheartedly. Our manufacturing processes have undergone thorough assessments, ensuring that every aspect – from materials sourcing to final inspection – aligns with the stringent ISO 9001 criteria. It involves being audited by an independent body and is very thorough in ensuring that we have a quality system encompassing every facet of our caravans and camper trailers.

Achieving this certification is a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing customers with offroad campers and caravans that meet or exceed the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

RVMAP CERTIFICATION:

What does it mean to be RVMAP Accredited?

The Recreational Vehicle Manufacturing Accreditation Program (RVMAP) is managed by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia with accredited businesses required to demonstrate a genuine commitment to supplying products that adhere to relevant Australian Design Rules and Federal Compliance Regulation.

It is completely voluntary, so only the most committed manufacturers that strive to achieve this accreditation in the areas of safety, technology and excellence will attain this certification.

EXPERT TEAM IN THE FIELD OF PRODUCT AND TECHNICAL STANDARDS

At MDC, we have a team of 5 dedicated experts working for us in the field of Product and Technical Standards, headed by James Field – our General Manager – Commercial & Product. James is also a board member with the Caravan Trade & Industries Association Queensland, and before partnering with us for the past 3 years, he spent 6 years as Chief Technical Officer developing all the standards as the industry representative to Government, with the Caravan Industry Association of Australia.

James is instrumental in seeing MDC surge forward as leaders of our industry, and we are proud of our achievements and the fact we are making the world of caravanning and recreational vehicles a much safer and regulated industry by working closely with the Association and supporting all their initiatives.
