Flinders Ranges in South Australia is one of Australia’s most rugged and spectacular landscapes you’ll find yet access by vehicle is much easier than you think. Easy doesn’t mean without risk however, you’ll need to take all the usual precautions for remote travel.
Our Flinders experience begins at Hawker with a last minute top up on fuel and supplies and considering who is among our convoy, copious cans of the amber liquid for our week in the remote foothills. Heading north along the Flinders Ranges Way the landscape is truly breathtaking winding through rugged hills and valley’s in between. If remote camping and ancient landscapes excite you, this region will provide it in spades without leaving the main track., however, there are some other adventures and places to see.
Wilpena Pound Resort is another great spot if you feel like some civilised comfort or need fuel and supplies. Camping with your camper or caravan is also welcome .
Blinman to the north is a good spot to stock up and nearby it’s well worth checking out the Flinders and Beyond Camel Treks. The staff here are simply a delight and will take you on a camel trek which I think is mandatory for the full Flinders experience.
Fuel: There are plenty of opportunities to purchase fuel and supplies along the way but make sure you prepare well as spares will take time.
